Funerals

Remembering the deceased and proclaiming the resurrection

On behalf of the whole congregation of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, please receive our heartfelt sympathy and prayers during this tender time of loss. When we gather for a funeral or memorial service, we remember with gratitude the life of the one who has died, even as we cling to the Christian promise of resurrection, hope, and the everlasting love of God.

In worship we pray, sing, and hear God’s Word—not to erase our grief, but to hold it in the light of Christ, who meets us in death and leads us into life.

What happens at a funeral?

Services are generally held in the church and include Scripture, hymns, and prayer. Holy Communion may also be offered as a sign of God’s sustaining presence.

A brief eulogy may be shared, but open storytelling is usually reserved for a Celebration of Life, reception, or gathering after the service—places where memories can be shared more freely and personally.

Graveside / Committal Service

Following the funeral, many families choose to gather at the cemetery for a committal. This may include Scripture, prayer, and sometimes a hymn. It is usually brief, but deeply meaningful, as we entrust our loved one to God’s eternal care. The committal may be included as part of the funeral day or held separately if needed.

Planning a funeral at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior

We know that planning a funeral or memorial service can feel overwhelming. Please know that you are not alone—we are here to walk with you and to help carry some of the burden. Jesus promises, “Come to me, all you who are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” In that spirit, we seek to hold you, your family, and your grief with compassion and care.

If you would like to plan a funeral at LCOS, your first step is to contact the pastor. She will guide you gently through each part of the process and help create a service that honors your loved one and proclaims the hope we have in Christ.
