We are Lutheran
The Lutheran Church dates back to the Protestant Reformation in 16th century Germany and gets its name from Martin Luther. Lutheranism is a branch of the Christian Church rooted in the scriptures, refined by our confessional documents, and defined by our faith in the Triune God, who is loving, forgiving, and filled with endless grace.

We are a congregation of the Metro New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), is made up of more than 8,000 local communities called congregations, grouped into 65 regional groups known as synods, which are further organized into nine larger regions. These three levels work together like parts of one body, united by a common purpose: to share the message of Jesus Christ and to serve people in need.
Local congregations are where people gather regularly to worship and build community. Synods help connect these congregations within a region by offering support and resources. The larger church organization provides overall leadership and guidance, bringing all these parts together in mission and service. Each level depends on the others, creating a close-knit network of faith and care.
Within this structure, the Metro New York Synod is the regional community that connects congregations across New York City and nearby areas. It helps local churches work together, support one another, and carry out their shared mission in one of the world’s most vibrant and diverse cities.
We're so glad you're here!
At the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, we live in the creative tension of honoring the traditions that have shaped and sustained our faith while also stepping faithfully into the realities of the 21st century.
We cherish the liturgy, theology, and practices that root us in Christ, even as we remain open to where the Holy Spirit is leading us next. Trusting that God is always at work, we seek to move forward with courage and hope.
With that spirit, the Lutheran Church of Our Savior will enter an intentional season of mission and vision work in 2026. Together, we will listen deeply for God’s guidance as we discern how best to serve our community and participate in God’s good future. Stay tuned for more details.
